About me

Before children, I was a general nurse who worked on wards, but later specialised in Intensive Care.  It was an amazing career spanning over 20 years where I have witnessed many people undergoing surgery, and have seen first hand the complications that can happen as a result.  Now looking back after re skilling as a nutritionist, I realise how important having a solid nutritional foundation is to healing.  Make the weeks before elective surgery a time where you nourish your health, to give your body the resources that it needs  to recover from the trauma of surgery. The healthier you are going into surgery the smoother and faster your recovery will be.

Pre and post operative nutritional management plan

Studies have shown again and again that your nutritional status determines how well you recover from an operation.  Depending on the severity of the operation our nervous system activates the stress response, releasing cortisol our stress hormone and a host of other inflammatory mediators.  This is a natural response to surgery where our bodies are in a flux of damage control to repair the body.  Problems arise when we don't have the resources to allow this normal response to happen leading to a host of post operative complications:
In a 2016 study based in the Uk, data was collected over a 2 week period from 6 major hospitals on patients scheduled for elective abdominal surgery.  Out of 268 elective abdominal operations preformed 11.9% suffered from respiratory complications.  Interestingly that with every additional minute of operating time independent of other factors, significantly increased the length of hospital stay.
"The natural healing force within each one of us, is the greatest force in getting well.
Our food should be our medicine, our medicine be our food"

-Hippocrates

Here are some of the common post operative complications

Collapsed lung
Haemorrhage
Wound Breakdown
Respiratory or wound infection
Blood clots
Pulmonary embolism
Post operative confusion

Could this happen to you?
